This is a webpage dedicated to the memory of Rev. William Augustus Cane, born in Dublin 1755 and baptised at the St. John's Episcopalian Church, Dublin. He was a Lieutenant in the British Army 2nd (Queen's Royals) Regiment of Foot but in 1798 he became chaplain at the Doddington Church in Northumberland and later vicar at St Mary's-at-Hill, London. The list below gives a very brief overview of his life in preparation of his biography.

1720 His father, Maurice Cane, son of William, b Inchicore, Dublin, born.
1755 William Augustus Cane born. Family church St. John's Episcopalian Church, Dublin.
1762 At the age of 8 William joins the army (75th Foot) in Dublin as a drummer boy and fifer
- garrisoned at The Barracks, Dublin
1762 William’s father Major Maurice Cane of 75th Regiment of Foot promoted to Lt Col in the army.
1769 Adjutant William Augustus Cane promoted to Ensign, 2nd Regiment of Foot.
1777 5th October – engagement of William Augustus Cane (22), Lt in His Majesty’s 2nd Reg of Foot
to Miss Dorothy Ogle (age 17), St John’s, Newcastle.
1778 22 December – at Alnwick (33 miles north of Newcastle and 30 miles south of Berwick),
Northumberland married Dorothy Ogle.
1791 Oxford University, St Alban Hall, matriculated 11 March 1791, aged 35.
1794 Exeter College, Oxford, BA.
1795 Cane works as a clerk for Revs. Bowe, Witton and Hodgson.
1797 Exeter College, Oxford, MA – age 42
1798 4th Sept: letters testimonial for Cane given to Bishop Shute Barrington for admittance
to a benefice (at Doddington)
1812 June – became vicar at St Mary-at-Hill, London, age 53.
1817 20 August: Rev. Cane officiates at the marriage of Joseph Fenn and Sarah Finch at St Mary’s.
1834 Died at 39 Hans-place, London
1843 June 24, Hans-place Chelsea, death – Dorothy, relict of the Rev. W. A. Cane
